Zoë Life Story Example
Unless families take positive steps to preserve their family member’s life stories important elements will be lost. Perhaps lost for all times and perhaps not?
Listen to a short extract from Zoë’s story, it’s a facinating little snippet of her family history and tells of her forbears who included her Grandma, Catherine Anne Jones, and her father, Zoë’s Great, Great Grandfather, Captn Mathias Zones and the voyage of his ship “The Harriet”.
Zoë’s Life Story
Listen to Zoë’s Story of Captn. Mathias Zones and the voyage of “The Harriet ” (1:10 min)
In the case of Zoë’s life story who amongst her descendents knows the story of Catherine Anne Jones, her father Captn Mathias Zones and the story of the journey of the ship “The Harriet”? Who knows the story of the voyage of “The Harriet” when it came to Australia? Who knows that they went to New Zealand, briefly, very briefly, and lost a crew member reportedly to a Maori tribe who intended to eat him?
Zoë had a direct connection with Catherine Anne Jones, she is her grand daughter and Grandma Fowler (née Jones) was the daughter of Captn Mathias Jones and therefore heard the story of “The Harriet” directly from her father. Here is a direct link stretching back 150+ years. Of course the facts of the story would bear checking out. Experienced family historians would tell you that oral history is remembered history and sometimes facts can be wrong and need to be checked but if you have the basic story as told by a family member you get colour and details that really help bring your family history alive.
In Zoë’s life story she has told me that a ship’s log of the voyage of “The Harriet” exists and therefore a keen family historian for her family now knows that it does exist and has basic information to start the search in shipping archives for it.
